Verulam School Fencing Club

 

Verulam FencingSince September 2009, Verulam School has proudly offered the opportunity for all Verulam boys to partake in Fencing. Offered as an ECCO Club, Fencing has grown in recognition and popularity, now facilitating for over 16 boys from years 7 to 11. 

The club is run on a Tuesday 3-5pm in the old gym (10 weeks £45), coached by Paul Davis (an old Verulam Boy) Grade 1 foil, epee and sabre coach, who has represented Great Britain and won medals at the British Championships. 

Success of the Club has been noted through its popularity but also through medal success at both interschool and county championships with a bronze medal and quarter finalists gained. At current the school holds a competition at the end of each term (10 weeks of fencing) where the boys compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. In addition the school will this term (Christmas 2010) be involved in the first ever Davis Challenge Cup competition where Verulam will be competing against other schools in Hertfordshire. This year Verulam will be hosting the competition and welcomes parents and guardians to support their boys.

Verulam FencingThrough the professional approach to the sport and the provision of high quality fencing equipment, the club offers the boys the opportunity to compete locally and nationally for the school, work towards aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh, learn essential skill to gain supervisor and coaching awards, and refereeing qualification.

So, reasons to join the club are plentiful with a select few including: Friendly and welcoming, Active, Relaxing, New,Verulam Fencing Challenging, Exciting, Offers opportunities to represent the school and Personal progression. This diversity of reasons for joining the club is in part due to the quality of coaching and structure but mainly due to the boys who already partake in the club and proudly represent the school.

Future plans for the club include the increase to a beginners and senior fencing nights (Tuesday and Thursday/Monday) regular competitions and qualifications in coaching and refereeing.
