Public Examinations

The school takes the GCE Advanced Level and AS Examinations of OCR (Cambridge), AQA (AEB) or Edexcel (London). GCSE examinations are taken with OCR (MEG), AQA (SEG), AQA (NEAB) and Edexcel (London). General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) courses at Intermediate and Advanced level are validated by the Business and Technology Education Council (Edexcel).

The majority of pupils attempting GCSE examinations do so in Year 11 when they either are or are about to become 16. In the summer 2004 examinations it is planned that boys in Year 11 will be entered for GCSE in: Art & Design; Business Studies; Resistant Materials; Graphic Products; Technology; Electronics; Food Studies; Economics; English; English Literature; French; German; Geography; History; Information Technology; Latin; Mathematics; Music; Physical Education; Science: Modular; Drama. Half GCSE examinations will be taken in Information Technology & Religious Studies. Pupils also take a course in Citizenship but this is not examined.

The great majority of our students complete Year 11 having attempted at least nine GCSE examination subjects. It should also be noted that the best mathematicians are currently entered for GCSE Mathematics at the end of Year 10. A small number of able linguists may also enter for GCSE French at this time.

In Year 12/13 (Two Year Sixth) AS and Advanced Level (A level) courses are taken. In the summer 2004 examinations it is planned that students in Year 13 will be entered for GCE A2 level examinations in Art; Biology; Business Studies; Chemistry; Economics; English; French; Further Mathematics; Geography; History; ICT; Mathematics; Music; Music Technology; Physics; Photography; German; Sociology; Design & Technology and Food Technology. A two-year AVCE in Business is now established. Other AVCE courses are taken by our pupils at consortium schools.

In Year 12 AS Level examinations are taken in all the subjects listed for Year 13 and also in Media Studies and Critical Thinking
