There have been some changes in arrangements which we may make for some pupils in their forthcoming external examinations.
The Joint Council for Qualifications has now published its regulations along with the rationale behind them. They can be downloaded from the JCQ website at www.jcq.org.uk.
Perhaps the most relevant change affecting this school are that a diagnosis of dyslexia is no longer sufficient to allow extra time. There is no specific access arrangement for poor spelling. Many boys and their parents often make a request on this basis. Private EP reports are not encouraged by the examing board.
Mrs. Dixon (Verulam's exams officer) and Mrs. Hignett (Senco)work together to see if we have any candidates for whom access arrangements may be awarded.
The examination boards are quite explicit in ensuring that their criteria are met and therefore any arrangements made by school will have to fulfill these criteria. The Awarding bodies check that arrangements do not undermine the integrity of the qualification. Failure to comply with their regulations may constitute malpractise which may inturn impact on a candidates result.
If it is felt that your son will meet the examination board's criteria then he will be informed by Mrs. Hignett and will be allowed to use the arrangement in the forthcoming mock examinations.
We wish all our students the very best in all their exams.
